You can help your ranking by working on the text that links to your page – if the links say “Home Page” or “Click Here”, they don’t do you any good – the keywords that you are trying to optimize for are the words that should be in the links, with some rotating and variety.

You can generate those links by submitting to your industry or subject’s directory, creating articles about your topic and linking back to yourself in the author box, reciprocal linking campaigns, buying links, posting to blogs, comments in forums – all work well to signify what you page is about.

If you have a good resource – a resource of value – people will begin to link to it of their own accord – and rankings generally rise over time as people discover a resource – so don’t waste time creating websites, getting links, and popularity, just to be banned for trying some SEO tricks – the search engines want to work WITH you, instead of against you!

Google Adwords estimates the possible traffic in clicks per day of a keyword. It displays the possible average position if using Google Adwords. It calculates the daily costs according to a given budget. It finds alternatives to each tested keyword. Google shows the clickthroughrate CTR. This is the percentage of clicks that a website receives in relation to the impressions (the number of times a website is shown). The higher the clickthroughrate the stronger the keyword!

Goodkeywords is a free windows software for finding the perfect set of keywords for the webpages. The software can be downloaded. No registration is required.

Using, supervising and revising keywords

It’s not easy to find and choose the right keyword. The described tools are very useful. The reality has to show the results. It’s important to supervise and track the used keywords weekly and to revise them from time to time. Even a CPC campaign on a small budget can be sufficient to determine the trends and popularity of the used keywords.

Try an Experiment

If you have a web site, try this experiment when you have some spare time. Pick a nonsense phrase, like “bed happy meatball” or anything equally silly. Make sure it’s something very unlikely to appear on a web page anywhere, and make sure it’s a phrase (not a single word). Also, make sure it does not appear on your own site.

Next, get a few friends or co-workers with web sites of their own to post a link to your site using that exact phrase (without the quotation marks) as the anchor text. What’s anchor text, you ask? It’s simply the word or words that form the clickable part of a link.

Now, wait a while. Make a note to yourself to check your web site’s ranking in the results for a search of your chosen nonsense phrase at a major search engine in a month or two. Unless you picked a phrase that actually appears on other sites, you’ll find that your site is #1! Moreover, that’s in spite of the fact that the chosen phrase does not appear anywhere on your actual web site. Think about that.

An infamous, large-scale example of this same test involved the phrase “miserable failure.” Some enterprising bloggers got together a few years ago and decided to link lots of sites to the official biography page for President George W. Bush at the whitehouse.gov site. The goal, of course, was to make that page show up in the #1 position whenever unsuspecting (or in this case, many suspecting) searchers typed in that phrase. It worked. (Side note: at last check, Michael Moore – famous film maker and Bush detractor, was in the #2 position at Google for this same search). Again, keep in mind that the phrase “miserable failure” does not appear anywhere on either man’s web site.

Is There a Point?

OK, so why bother with this seemingly asinine experiment (that’s actually been dubbed ‘Googlebombing’)? Ahh, Grasshopper, for the lesson it imparts. Which is? Well, it points to the power of anchor text in determining search engine ranking. And it has definite relevance to your activities as a webmaster.

Many of your fellow site owners – including a lot of them who run sites in direct competition with yours – have never heard of anchor text. Some of you reading this may be unfamiliar with it. But, as should be clear now, anchor text plays a major role in search engine ranking positions.

In basic terms, it works like this…

Search engines rely on links to help them ascertain both the theme of a given web site and its popularity. Knowing that, consider two scenarios. In the first, your site has built up a lot of links pointing to it, and each one has your domain name as the clickable part of the link (anchor text). Let’s say your domain name is your company’s name, JoeSmithBakery.com – and you sell baking supplies. OK, great – now your site will show up in the #1 position at the search engines whenever anyone searches for your domain name! Hmm. Think that one through. If they know your domain name, why would they need a search engine to find it?

In the second scenario, you have lots of links pointing to your bakery site, but instead of the domain name as the anchor text, you wisely chose a phrase that lots of people search for, like ‘baking supplies.’

Easy question: which would you prefer – being #1 at Google when people search for your domain name or being #1 when people search for bakery supplies? This is why the anchor text you choose for the links you build is so important.

A Plan of Action

Now, here’s a simple plan of action to improve your site’s link situation and search engine ranking going forward from this day…

Step 1 – Research Keywords

A great service is provided by the folks at wordtracker.com. They catalog search activity at the major engines, and then make available those numbers to the general public. You simply type in a word or phrase related to your site’s theme, and wordtracker shows you the number of times that entry is being searched at the major search engines. Cool, huh? The service will also give you a list of related terms, so you can look for other important search words to target.

Step 2 – Pick a Few and Get Some Links

Compile a list of several search terms that are most closely related to your site’s theme and that get searched for often. It’s up to you, of course, but you should pick those phrases that get a few hundred to several thousand searches. These will be the terms you use in the anchor text of the inbound links you build from now on. Doing so will really increase your site’s search engine traffic – once all your new links begin to boost your rankings.

Nothing Else Changes

Now, just carry on with your usual link building activities: reciprocal links, one-way links from directories and article distributions, etc. The only change is to make sure you choose a phrase from your list to use as the clickable part of the link you ask for (the anchor text). If you rotate your choices, your site will move up in the rankings for each phrase. The only downside is that you’ll be getting fewer links per phrase, so it may take longer for any single phrase to rank high.

Keep in mind that the phrases you pick will be popular, unlike those in the examples that began this article. To score high rankings, you’ll need to be diligent and get lots of links. Never stop! Over time, this strategy will really help your site’s traffic, but it does take time. As the famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, famously wrote: “All good things come to those who wait.”

You have read about many companies that are
in default on their pension plan payments and many
others that are discontinuing contributory
plans. In other words you are on your own when
it comes to creating a retirement plan. We won’t
discuss health benefits also being eliminated at
this time.

If your employer will not help (I said help
and not provide) with your saving for the future
what can you do? If you don’t have a rich
relative you better look in the mirror and see
who is going to take care of you when you decide
to retire (or be fired). You may not be able to
find another job or you might not be in good
enough health to work at all. That nest egg
better be there.

Many small businesses do not have the
capabilities to have even a simple plan because
there are restrictions and legal requirements
that can be expensive as well as liabilities the
company does not wish to take on. Ask the boss
if he will implement one, but don’t blame him if
he refuses. It is ultimately your responsibility
to take care of yourself.

If an employer cannot or will not set up a
retirement plan for you then it is up to you to
do for yourself. You can do this at no charge at
almost any brokerage company or bank. All it
takes is some of your time. These institutions
want your money and will do the paperwork with
you. My suggestion is with a large well-known
discount broker. A simple IRA can be done very
quickly.

You will want what is called a Self Directed
IRA. This allows you to invest your funds in
almost anything. Stick with safe equities such
as money markets, mutual funds and Treasury
Bonds, maybe some in each category. Because most
people are not familiar with investing do not
put money into unknown equities such as Limited
Partnerships.

See if you can have your employer make a
direct deposit each payday into that account as a
deduction from your paycheck. That way you won’t
spend it before you get there.

Brokers and bankers will want to give you
“advice”. Don’t listen. Do your own research as
to how to make money. The most important thing
about the stock market is knowing when to sell
NOT when or what to buy. If you don’t have an
exit strategy then do not invest in the stock
market. Stay with nice safe Treasury bonds.

When you do reach retirement the pension
plan you set up will then decide your diet of either
cat food or filet mignon. That decision is up to
you starting right now.

5. Offer other web sites, that are relevant to your own, free content articles about your area of expertise to post on their web site. Include your link on all of your content. Your article should be related to your web site because it will bring you visitors that are interested in your product or service.

6. Use an article distribution service that distributes articles to thousands of web sites, newsletters and ezines at one time. Your article will be published on dozens of web sites almost immediately. I used this technique with an article distribution service called thephantomwriters.com and got literally thousands of links from only four articles. Distribute your articles several times and you will increase your exposure. Change your article’s title and redistribute it several times more to maximize your article’s potential.

As you can clearly see, writing and distributing articles can have a profound affect on your web site’s exposure. There is absolutely no better or faster way to increase your web site’s exposure, link popularity and search engine rankings.

Has your house lost power? Did you fridge break overnight? Do you have qualms about food that was in the freezer?

Not to worry – there are some simple guidelines to food safety in such a situation.

If the food has been completely thawed or even warmed to room temperature, throw it away. Discard it if it has been out of the refrigerator for over two hours.

Make sure to cook the food right away if it’s almost thawed and still a little cold. Foods that have been cooked may then be consumed or refrigerated for later use.

If the food still has ice crystals on it, you may refreeze it. You can put it in a cooler with some dry ice if there is no freezer available to you. You will have to cook these food right away because you won’t have the longevity that you will find with a normal freezer.

If you notice any food with even a little freezer burn, you need to throw it away.

Storms and accidents will always cause power outages; however, you can use preparation to be ready for whatever happens.

There has always a time in my life when I wanted a little more money. I have been fortunate to always have had all I needed but have always fallen a bit short of all I wanted.
