What Exactly Are Pocket Bikes?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Pocket bikes, also known as mini motos, are miniature sized motorcycles averaging around 47 inches long and 18 inches tall. Pocket bike, although small enough to carry under one’s arm, are capable of impressive speeds. They are usually built with gas-powered engines. The smaller industrial-motored models used by Junior class racers are capable of speeds of over 35 mph, the average 4.2 hp and 6.2 hp racing models achieve about 40-45 mph, and open class machines reach speeds over 50 mph.

Pocket bikes can be built with many of the features common to regular bikes, such as disc brakes in the front and rear, racing tires, fairings, lightweight aluminum alloy cast perimeter frames and swing arms. Originally, pocket bikes were solely made by specialty manufacturers who sold them at expensive prices. As their appeal has grown, however, affordable pocket bike imports have become available to a much larger group of motor sport enthusiasts.

While many owners race their pocket bikes at competitions and go-kart tracks, others simply enjoy riding their pocket bikes in open local areas.

There are many options for legally racing your pocket bike with friends and in organized competitions. A racing sanctioning body has been established to promote racing in North America called NAPRA, the North American Pocket Bike Racing Association. Go-kart tracks offer a road racecourse that is perfectly scaled to Pocket bikes. Whatever your choice, it is yours to make. And it will be a fun one. Nothing quite matches Pocket bike racing!

Roll Your Quarterback Out and Win More Games

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Football teams ranging from the high school level down to
the youth football level will never be successful passing
the ball.

Do you believe this? Many coaches and football bystanders
do. I do not.

In my experience, if you’re trying to have success with five
or seven step drops, then my opening statement is true.
However, if you implement the shorter three-step drop and
roll-outs, you can definitely have success passing the ball
with youngsters.

Let’s take a closer look at the types of roll-outs you can
use with your youth football team to gain those crucial
yards necessary to move the chains.

1) Basic Wide Roll-Out

The basic idea behind the roll-out is to create pressure on
the defenders to make a decision on whether to defend the
run or pass. At the snap, your quarterback runs to the left
or right behind the line of scrimmage instead of dropping
straight back.

As your quarterback “rolls out”, the cornerback or
linebacker in coverage to that side must make a decision: Do
they commit to stopping the quarterback from running or stay
in pass coverage?

If the defender stays in coverage, the quarterback can throw
if the receiver is open or take off and run if the receiver
is covered. If the defender decides to come up to stop the
run, you may have a wide open receiver for your quarterback
to pass to.

2) Short Roll-Out

On a short roll-out, you’ll instruct your quarterback to
move just past the tackle. This type of roll-out gives you
the same advantages as explained in the “wide” roll-out with
the added option of the throwback pass to the side opposite
that of your quarterback’s roll-out direction.

3) Sprint-Out

The sprint-out is a roll-out where your quarterback will
take a quicker and more shallow route along the line as he
moves behind the running backs. Usually, you’ll have two or
three receivers (half-back, tight end, flanker) on the play
side run quick outs or hooks so the quarterback can get the
ball out quickly. You can also have the quarterback give a
quick pitch to a half-back rolling out in front of the QB.

4) Bootleg

Whereas in the previously mentioned roll-out types your
quarterback moves in the same direction as the running
backs, on a bootleg he moves in the opposite direction. At
the snap, your quarterback will fake to a running back, then
roll to the opposite side of the field.

A bootleg is good in short yardage situations or at the goal
line. As the defense reacts to the flow of the play in one
direction, your quarterback is moving with the ball in the
opposite direction and will usually find an open area in
which to run or pass into.

Some teams will have a lineman pull out to provide extra
protection while some run a pure “naked” boot where only the
quarterback rolls opposite the initial flow direction.

5) Waggle

There are different opinions on what constitutes a waggle.
Some coaches call it a waggle when the quarterback fakes to
one or two running backs and then rolls behind the backs as
they all move in the same direction.

Other coaches call it a waggle when the quarterback makes
the fake and then moves out in the opposite direction as
explained above in the “bootleg” section. Usually, the
pulling lineman is employed in this type of roll-out.

I’ve often found that young offensive lineman have trouble
holding out defenders long enough for the five and
seven-step drops. Plus, the roll-outs described above will
most likely open up more receivers for you as many youth
defenders will get confused on whether to come up for the
run or stay back in coverage.

It’s up to you, but if you desire success with passing the
football in the youth leagues, I highly recommend you get
good at employing some form of the roll-out into your
playbook.

With conference well under way, Matt Fargo takes a look at three big games on tap that you cannot miss this Saturday.

UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies 4:00 PM ET

A 4-1 Pac Ten team takes on a 2-2 squad but those roles are reversed of what most people would have thought. The Bruins are off to a flying start in the conference despite injury problems since practice started. This team has as many as four key players on the injured list but isn’t letting that get in the way. After an 11-0 start, Washington has dropped two of its last four and it could be more as it finally takes to the road.

Washington played 12 of its first 14 games at home while those other two games were on a neutral floor. Home losses to Arizona in overtime and to rival Washington St. have dealt a small blow to the Huskies although the conference season is just getting underway. They are coming off a big road win at USC, their first true road game of the season so this will be the first experience of a back-to-back road set.

UCLA has won three straight after suffering a surprising home loss to California at the end of last month. The only other loss on the season was to Memphis in the semis of the preseason NIT. UCLA is in sole possession of the conference lead and a win here could give them a possible two-game lead. The Bruins have played the 55th ranked schedule in the nation so they have been tested against some of the best already.

Both offenses are shooting over 49 percent on the season even though Washington is averaging more than 20 additional points per game. That is due to an up-tempo offense, where the defense allows more points, and also a schedule that is ranked 305th in the country. The home team has won the last four meetings while the Bruins have won seven of the last nine meetings and are poised to continue that run.

Xavier Musketeers at Charlotte 49ers 7:00 PM ET

First place is on the line in the Atlantic Ten as two of the four remaining undefeated teams in conference action take the floor in Charlotte. Both teams come in red-hot, carrying five-game winning streaks and offenses that have been on fire. Xavier is averaging 78.8 ppg while Charlotte is averaging 80.4 ppg during those streaks so the defense that steps up likely gets the W.

The Musketeers have lost only twice all season long and those two defeats came by a combined five points to Creighton and Illinois. Four of their last five wins have been by 17 or more points while nine of the 10 wins on the year have been by double digits. Xavier is third in the country in shooting margin at +12.2 percent, trailing only Florida and Texas for the top spot.

Charlotte got off to a rocky start this year with a 1-3 record but things are turning around for the 49ers. In addition to their five straight wins, they have taken nine of their last 11 games including five straight on the road. The home floor has been the issue however as Charlotte is just 4-3 at Halton Arena. That includes losses to Mississippi St. and Valparaiso but things have turned around with two straight home wins.

This is the 49ers first season in the Atlantic Ten and things have gotten off to a great start but the Musketeers have a chip on their shoulder. Xavier leads the conference in seven major categories but playing a schedule ranked 197th in the nation has definitely helped those numbers. The 10-2 start is Xavier’s best since beginning the 2000-01 season with an 11-2 mark.

Syracuse Orangemen at Cincinnati Bearcats 8:00 PM ET

Two big time programs meet for the first time ever as Syracuse heads to Cincinnati for its second straight road game. The Orange can keep pace with West Virginia and Pittsburgh for the Big East lead while the Bearcats could use the win to avoid falling from 4th all the way down to possibly 12th in the conference. Six Big East teams are ranked in the latest AP poll, yet Syracuse, one of only three unbeaten conference teams, isn’t one of them.

Syracuse traveled outside of New York for just the second time this season and came away with a win over Notre Dame on Wednesday. It was the Orange’s 11th straight victory and a win over the Bearcats will no doubt vault them back into the rankings. The offense has been hit or miss during the streak as they have scored 80 or more points six times but have also scored fewer than 70 points three times.

The Bearcats had a 10-game win streak snapped against the Huskies as the offense failed to reach 70 points for the first time in 11 games. Cincinnati is 8-2 at home on the season but has won five straight games at Fifth Third Arena since losing to third-ranked Memphis. Guard Armein Kirkland is out for the season for the Bearcats as he suffered a torn ACL against Connecticut in their last game.

Both offenses are high potent attacks, averaging a combined 157.2 ppg on the season. For Syracuse, it isn’t overly impressive seeing that it has played a schedule ranked 242nd in the country. The Bearcats have faced a slate ranked 20th in the nation for their 80.6 ppg looks better between the two. Both defenses allow less than 40 percent shooting from the floor while Cincinnati has a +12.4 percent edge at the free throw line.

The Resurgence of Scrabble

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Invented and designed by Alfred Butts during the great depression and originally known as “Criss-Cross Words”, Scrabble was renamed into the board game we know today in 1948.

Today, Scrabble is not merely just a board game. It is an internationally competitive “mind sport” with an active competitive circuit, Scrabble Clubs, National Associations and World Championships.

Growth of Scrabble Clubs across the globe continues each year and the standard of competition grows along with it. As a mind sport, Scrabble is quickly approaching the level of intellectual challenge and respect that is held by other mind-sports such as Chess.

The growing popularity of Scrabble today defies the myriad of similar rival word-based board games that have emerged over the past two decades.

Successful Scrabble players know that there is far more to this game than just spelling and vocabulary skills. Scrabble is a mind sport, requiring mathematical skills, analytical and strategic skills, and a mild dose of luck.

To the recreational Scrabble player who enjoys a game with the family over the kitchen table, the lack (or bad luck) of drawing the best (or worst) collection of tiles out of the bag is a major component of whether a player wins or loses. The more advanced and competitive the player, the less luck plays a part. Strategic skills largely eliminate the luck component.

There are several reasons why Scrabble is growing in popularity year by year.

In earlier eras, there were problems with different dictionaries allowing or disallowing various words. Today, Official Scrabble Dictionaries have been almost totally standardized internationally for English language play. There are now just two slightly differing sets of official words – one for North America and another for the rest of the world.

The Scrabble Clubs themselves generate publicity in their communities, offering not just competition, but also a social scene for the less serious yet still enthusiastic recreational player.

Inter-club tournaments, Nation Championships and World Championships draw major media attention.

Even ESPN has trialed televising Scrabble competitions and is believed to be keen on expanding their coverage of Scrabble as a competitive mind sport.

In several countries, Scrabble Clubs and associations are working actively with Government Education Departments to introduce “School Scrabble” – combining the academic and the sporting aspects of Scrabble into the school curriculum.

The internet is playing a role in the growing popularity of Scrabble with numerous websites available for playing Scrabble online. Educational resources and advice from Scrabble experts is also readily available online.

The future growth of Scrabble internationally appears assured. Given that the International Olympic Committee is now considering a number of mind-sports, such as Bridge, for possible inclusion in future Olympic Games, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that at some future point in time Scrabble itself may become an Olympic sport.

How To Change Your Electric Guitar Strings

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Many guitarists, especially beginners, struggle with changing electric guitar strings. But it really is a simple exercise. Here’s a straightforward guide you can follow:

Tools.

You will need a small needle nose pliers to cut and bend the strings, and a string winder to help you wind the strings quickly.

Remove the string.

You should change each guitar string one at a time. That way, you will avoid warping the guitar neck, and you will be able to quickly tune the new string to the other strings.

I usually remove the 6th string first. Use your string winder and turn the tuning peg until the string becomes very slack. Now cut off the twisted end of the old string so that it slips easily out of the guitar. Then wind the top section of your string out of the tuning peg.

What you do next will vary depending on the type of electric guitar you have. The one I’m using, the strings go through the body. Remove the old string. Pay close attention to the way your old string comes off, and do the opposite when putting a new one back on.

Relace the string.

Now let’s put back a new string. Feed the string through a hole in the body of your electric guitar, or the tail piece. As said earlier, it depends on your particular electric guitar. Get the ball end of your string in place.

Now pull the string over the bridge, over the nut of the neck, and up past the tuning peg. Make sure it isn’t slack. The new string is very long so you will have to cut some of it off. Leave enough string for a few winds around the tuning peg. Two inches above the peg should work.

Pull the string through the hole of the tuning peg and begin winding it. The string shouldn’t be slack. To keep the tension, place your fingers under the string. With the guitar facing you, wind the tuning pegs on the left side clockwise. Wind those on the right side anticlockwise.

To speed up the winding process, place your string winder over the tuning peg and wind until the string becomes tight. Then take off the peg winder and use the tuning peg to tune the string.

Now that you’ve changed and tuned your 6th string, you can just repeat the process for all the other strings.

Breaking in.

Since the strings are new, they can stretch and go out of tune easily. They need to break in. You can speed up the breaking in process by stretching the string yourself. Give the strings a few gentle pulls or do some spirited strumming.

You will find yourself having to tune your guitar quite a bit after replacing your strings. But after one or two days everything should be okay.

Do you Hate doing Cardio?

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I’m very much into health and fitness, but I hate doing cardio- I dread it. When I’m working out in the gym, I find myself trying to justify not doing it. But in the end, I know that cardio is important…

A turning point for me was when I recently came across an article in one of the health newsletters I subscribe to. It spoke about how short, but intense cardio sessions have many health benefits. It strengthens your heart, improves your health….and doesn’t damage your body like long cardio sessions potentially can (meaning hurt knees, strained ligaments, etc.)

This is what I now do and results have been great. I run on the treadmill for 25 minutes and it breaks down to such:

* 3 minute steady run
* 2 minute fast run
* repeat this 3 more times
* cool down with a 5 minute walk

I use a treadmill, but this can easily be adapted to any cardio machine. Try it and let me know what you think. I now don’t mind doing cardio and hopefully you’ll find yourself feeling the same way.

Maintaining An Allergy Free Environment Using Air Filters

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

If you have allergies caused by substances and microorganisms in the air, air filters are the solution to your needs. Allergy sufferers will want to grab the product which will improve their suffering. If you are allergic to airborne substances and microorganisms like dust mites or pollen, using an air purifier or an air filter can help you.

But, the degree of relief depends upon many other factors that are under your control. One type of air filter is the ionic air purifier. There are other kinds of air purifiers that may better suit your needs. There are filters that use electric attraction, and carbon filters to further cleanse and remove the impurities in the air. There are also filters which are placed in your home’s A/C unit. Through this, the filter cleans the air that is ventilated throughout your house. This would definitely increase the air quality in your house. If you are allergic to dust, then you should know the most effective ways to remove dust in your home. Using air purifiers is one solution. These aim to reduce the allergenic substances in your environment that is surrounding your home.

So what is an air purifier? An air purifier is equipment which is normally located in one room or area, and its primary job is to cleanse and filter the air. An air purifier may work differently depending upon its model and what it is made of. There are those units that you are obliged to clean and check on every once in a while and need replacement periodically. Some purifiers use a method of ionization to capture and remove allergen particles in the air and force airborne particulates to stick to exterior surfaces and the air cleaner sucks them up later on.

Using air purifiers is very beneficial to many families. Some families have air purifiers in each of their rooms and bedrooms. These filters, however, require regular cleaning. Some doctors recommend not using carpets and using vinyl flooring instead. Dust mite encasements are advised for use on all beddings in the house to prevent dust mites. Some families even have a portable air filter they take with them while they are on their vacation to ensure that they stay in a hotel room that is as safe as their house.

If you are using an air filter that needs some replacement or cleansing on a regular basis, you should examine it periodically to lengthen the life of your equipment. However, be careful in examining and checking the equipment. Follow the instructions or hire heating or cooling personnel to check it and replace parts. To ensure that you completely remove the dust, be sure to steam clean the carpets or remove carpeting altogether.

Use Sauces to Make Meals Taste Better

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

There are many recipes out there and so many different ways to make food to the certain taste and preference that you desire. With that being said, there are also sauces that can help just about any meal taste better. If you are not the best cook in the world and only know the basics of cooking, then you could find some great luck with learning how to make great tasting sauces.

Sauces are used to make the food taste better. If you baked a chicken, you could eat that chicken during three different meals, and if you have three different types of sauces then it will be as if you made three different dishes. A few sauces that you can use are tomato sauce, allioli, and romesco sauce. It is as simple as taking a day to prepare the three sauces and use them for the week. The sauces are quite easy to make, just follow directions from your favorite cook book and mix the proper ingredients together. When you plate up your dish of chicken, put the remesco sauce on top and it will give the meal a unique taste. Most of us are real busy and don’t have a lot of time to cook. It is important to get healthy meals in with your Acceletrim diet solution, and because you are so busy all you will have to do to make the meal taste better is place a sauce on top of your protein source.
