IOSH Asks Employers to Reduce Stress on Workers
Tuesday, June 30th, 2009Employers must reduce the stress on their employees, to avoid a stress epidemic, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has cautioned.
Nattasha Freeman, the President of IOSH says that during these times of economic recession, employers must make an extra effort to keep the workload reasonable, and relax the pressure on the employees. She adds that the demand on workers has been increasing steadily, and that they do not complain as they are perennially afraid of losing their jobs. Economic recession has also resulted in salary cuts, while the cost of living is only rising. These factors contribute to higher stress levels among the employees.
YouGov carried out a survey recently, and concluded that 44% of employees felt increased pressure in their jobs due to the recession, with two-thirds of them stating that their biggest concern was job insecurity. A different survey found that more than 13% of employees find their work highly stressful. Ms. Freeman further adds that work-related stress can leave people out of work for a long time, and that this situation creates even greater stress. To avoid this, employers must help prevent stress from occurring in the first place. People should be encouraged to make better use of health and medical services to remain healthy.
