How to Get a Job in 2009
We’re all sick of hearing about the liquidity crisis, particularly if you’re one of the jobless. You can turn off the radio, but you can’t escape the fact of life that the world is in a deep recession and it’s not going away anytime soon.
What can we do? The established ways of hunting for a job are not so effective when you have 130 other job seekers applying for the same position. Picking up the local newspaper, browsing the unemployment bureau, etc – you’re just part of the large herd looking for a job in this unimaginative way.
You should look for work in ways in which your competitors are few and far between. These days a lot of firms advertise work placements on their company website, so go to your search engine and enter key words to target local companies. Use a variety of keywords between location only e.g. jobs Staffordshire UK, and locale and profession e.g. sales jobs Tamworth.
Another alternative is to work for yourself – to be self-employed. What we’ve learnt over the last year is that big companies can go bust very quickly. Being self-employed means you control your own destiny, something no employee of a company can ever say they have. The main thing is you pick the kind of career you love as you will need to be motivated.
